julia gonzales2025-08-30Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. So happy to have our family a part of Jiu Jitsu at WCJJ! Coach Raffi and Sara are phenomenal human beings who treat all the kids as their own. Highly recommend putting your kids in here for a class! Riley Thompson2025-07-20Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Love it. Almost didn't want to write a review to keep it on the q.t. but it's a great place. Very family friendly and a lot of parents practice as well. William “Bill” Huff, Jr.2025-04-12Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I'm a 6th Degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate, studied in multiple martial arts styles for the past 35 years and owner of a martial arts school for 30+ years... I don't share that to brag; I share it so that people understand I've seen literally hundreds of martial arts schools and instructors over the years, plus I've studied the profession to be the best I could be while I was in it. Professor Rafa and his staff are OUTSTANDING. Why? Because they lead and live from the heart. Professor Rafa leads by example - he LOVES by example. His energy, his enthusiasm, his dedication to his Academy and his students is palpable when you enter his school. He's outstanding - as is his staff - with all ages and skill levels. He's humble and open to feedback, constantly working on being the best version of himself so he can be the best for his students. I have the utmost respect for him and what's he's building at West Coast; so much so that I train with him and I have my son training with him, too. If you have ever thought about staring martial arts training or Brazilian Jiujitsu, don't even hesitate for a second - give West Coast a call and come see for yourself how amazing this place is... Brian Asahi2025-02-08Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My whole family trains at West Coast for a few years now, and we absolutely love it. Here is why: Environment: Clean, friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Training: The instructors are absolute professionals, highly knowledgeable and skilled Jiujitsu practitioners and teachers. Our students consistently rank at a very high level in the competition circuit. Of course, they will tailor instruction and training to the goals of the student, if competition isn't your thing. Community: Very positive, fun, and genuine. We feel a real bond with the other students, families, and the instructors. These are simply great people to train and spend time with, and that may be the single most important thing in your BJJ journey. Facility: Very high quality, clean, spacious mat space. Nice bathrooms, locker rooms, shower, cold plunge, even an acai Machine! Head instructor: Rafael is highly technically skilled and an outstanding educator. He is friendly, enthusiastic, and fun, yet highly professional. His students are his top priority, and he is dedicated to their growth and success with genuine care and integrity For me, it has been a great way to stay in great physical shape, socialize, and have fun learning a new skill. If you are at all interested in training, please come check it out! Greg Stoutenburgh2025-02-02Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My son was getting bullied badly at school when he was 7. He is quite small for his age and didnt want to play any team sports. I forced him to try JiuJitsu and after calling around, Rafa at West Coast was my clear favorite. Rafa is incredible with the kids teaching them confidence and humility and respect. My son went from being meek and afraid to a confident and proud force. 2 years in and he competes in Jius Jitsu regularly and was designated league Champion last year for JiuJistsu World League. He loves Jiu Jitsu and his gym. It changed his life and trajectory. Other gyms are maybe good, but none are West Coast quality and no others have Rafa at the helm. Could not recommend more strongly. Brendan Villa2024-12-30Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This is the best BJJ gym I have attended in Orange County. I had some trouble finding other BJJ gyms near me at first after leaving my other gym, but this one instantly clicked with me. The culture of the gym is amazing. Everyone is very respectful and easygoing. Professor Rafael makes you feel at home and makes you feel like a true family member of the gym, not just some other member. Overall, I would recommend this gym to any level, whether beginner or advanced! andrei lim2024-08-09Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Each class begins with a simple warm up. Then your coach will lead the class through the technique portion of the day. Technique is done slow, and controlled so even when your brand new you get a chance to practice. After technique sometimes we play a "mini game" based on the technique and position of the day and then we line up, thank our training partners and that ends the class. There won't be any live sparring or rolling on your first day to keep you safe.
At WEST COAST JIU-JITSU we aren't an ego based competitive gym. We want our students to learn martial arts in a place where they feel comfortable and safe.
No! This is a massive misconception in martial arts. The only thing that's going to get you fit is to start training and practicing regularly. You can go at a pace that works for you and build your fitness up over time.
The order of belt ranking in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black.
Everyone starts as a white belt, no matter their age, physical condition, or previous martial arts experience.
As you make progress in you knowledge, skills, and abilities you will be recognized by stripes on your belt and eventually a new belt level.
Getting good at Jiu Jitsu specifcally takes time and practice the secrets to advancing in rank are to show up consistently, enjoy learning, and love the process of training.
The vast majority of students will train with us 2-3 times per week. As you are just starting out and everything is brand new 2 classes a week might be perfect for you.
Once you've got the hang of the basics you may decide to bump up to 3 or 4 classes per week.
So much of this depends on the individual who is training but for a broad statement 2-3 times per week is what you should aim for to see consistent lon term progress.
If you've never done martial arts or Jiu-Jitsu before you'll notice results within the first week or two. Your muscles might be a little sore but that will greatly reduce and you'll find yourself not getting tired as easily and your body bouncing back faster after class. You'll increase strength, flexibility and stamina and you will notice these changes very quickly with consistent training.
